For Students

The sites listed below are designed to provide accurate health information for young adults. HealthInfoIowa provides these sites as a guide; we do not endorse and are not responsible for information found at these sites. The list includes site title, website address, and a brief summary of the resources provided.

Center for Disease Control and Prevention
[http://www.cdc.gov/az.do]
Great site for teens needing sources for diseases or other health-related topics. The A-Z indexes link to areas on the CDC site for comprehensive and authoritative information. General overviews of topics complete with statistics, links to other Web sites, and a special section devoted just to adolescent health issues make this a very useful site.

Food and Drug Administration: On the Teen Scene
[www.fda.gov/oc/opacom/kids/html/7teens.htm]
This site uses articles from FDA Consumer that relate to teen issues. These articles can be found on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's site or reprinted upon request. A very wide range of topics—cosmetics to hearing, nutrition to asthma—written into articles of several pages and links to more information all make this an excellent site.

Go Ask Alice
[www.goaskalice.columbia.edu]
Go Ask Alice! is the health question and answer Internet service produced by Alice!, Columbia University's Health Education Program — a division of Health Services at Columbia.  The mission of Go Ask Alice! is to increase access to, and use of, health information by providing factual, in-depth, straight-forward, and nonjudgmental information to assist readers' decision-making about their physical, sexual, emotional, and spiritual health.

I Wanna Know
[www.iwannaknow.org]
Sponsored by the American Social Health Organization, which is dedicated to improving the health of individuals, families and communities with a focus on preventing sexually transmitted diseases and their harmful consequences.  This site provides information and frank answers to questions about puberty, sex and sexually transmitted diseases.

KidsHealth.org for Teens
[www.kidshealth.org/teen/index.html]
Probably one of the most accurate sites available to students—75 doctors have reviewed the health information—KidsHealth.org for Teens contains numerous articles in a variety of categories. The articles come complete with illustrations and photos, plus they offer links to related areas for more information. A sampling of topics includes: scoliosis, yeast infections, steroids, smoking, eating disorders, suicide and shyness.

Something Fishy
[www.somethingfishy.org]
Anyone suspecting a friend or family member has an eating disorder should check this site out. A wealth of information for teens on all types of eating disorders is available, along with recovery stories, statistics, prevention methods and causes. Local treatment options and national organizations are listed. The site also provides information to help people recognize signs and symptoms of eating disorders and what to do about them. While not a flashy site, it does provide important information in an easy-to-use search format.
