About HealthInfoIowa
Project Background
HealthInfoIowa is a result of a grant provided by the National Network of Libraries, Greater Midwest Region. The grant provided funds to support access to electronic health information for the public. The Iowa Consumer Health Information Project (ICHIP) managed the grant. Members in the ICHIP
were:
State Library of Iowa
Iowa Department of Public Health
Hardin Library for the Health Sciences, University of Iowa
Methodist/Lutheran/Blank Children's Hospital
Ames Public Library
Iowa Substance Abuse Information Center
Project Objectives
The ICHIP focused on five objectives for HealthInfoIowa:
- Health information consumers and providers will have access to a single consumer health web site that will combine national, state, regional, and local resources, improving their access not only to printed information but also to agencies, organizations, and services that can help consumers meet their health information needs.
- Health information consumers and providers will improve their ability to: search health information databases; find health information related to their needs; and evaluate the quality of the resources they find.
- Health information consumers and providers will be able to obtain or connect with identified resources, resulting in statewide equity of access to health information resources.
- Health information providers will enhance their ability to evaluate, select, distribute, and promote high quality health information and to assist consumers in finding and evaluating health information.
- Health information consumers and providers will be more aware of and make greater use of the full range of high quality resources available.
To achieve these objectives, the ICHIP designed a single, Iowa-focused web site, with authoritative content that ranges from national databases to regional and local links, that will serve as a simple and trustworthy first stop for Iowans, to which both information consumers and providers can turn for dependable support.
Project Scope and Methodology
The steps of the project were:
- Establish a multi-type advisory panel.
- Develop an Iowa Consumer Health Information web page (later termed HealthInfoIowa), hosted on the State Library's web site. Establish and use criteria to evaluate links to include on web site. (Description of the criteria used to evaluate links on HealthInfoIowa)
- Develop a training package and conduct training sessions for public libraries, hospitals, and health service agencies and organizations from all 99 counties in Iowa. Train participants on using the web site.
- Develop and distribute a media package for the use of libraries, hospitals, and health service agencies and organizations to promote the web site to the residents of Iowa.
- Promote the web site and the support and training available to consumer health information providers through professional library and health service meetings.
